Our Civil Group is comprised of Perini Civil Construction, the civil operations of Tutor-Saliba and Cherry Hill Construction, Inc., and focuses on public works construction primarily in the western, northeastern and mid-Atlantic United States, including the repair, replacement and reconstruction of the public infrastructure such as highways, bridges, mass transit systems and wastewater treatment facilities.
Our Management Services Group, including the recently merged Tutor-Saliba operation in Guam, provides diversified construction and design-build services to the U.S. military and government agencies as well as surety companies and multi-national corporations in the United States and overseas.
When was Tutor Perini founded?
In 1894, Bonfiglio Perini understood that joint ventures were a good way to grow his small civil works company, recognizing that two competing companies could be stronger together than apart. Through the years, the Company built long-standing relationships with contractors whose talents complemented its own. Since 1977, Tutor-Saliba Corporation (founded as A. G. Tutor Company in 1949) has been one of those valued joint venture partners, completing over 35 projects with Perini, with an aggregate value of $3 billion. In May 2009, 115 years since its founding, Perini Corporation joined forces - and resources - with Tutor-Saliba, to form Tutor Perini Corporation, creating one of the most versatile publicly held construction organizations in the U.S. and performing work throughout the world.
Tutor Perini's common shares are traded on the New York Stock Exchange under the ticker "TPC."
Who are Tutor Perini's clients?
Tutor Perini's clients include some of the most visionary developers and demanding public agencies in the world. During 2008, we performed work on approximately 225 construction projects for over 130 federal, state and local government agencies or authorities and private customers. Nearly all of these projects were constructed in urban environments, on extremely tight sites, and with some of the most sophisticated and complex systems and equipment.
How big is the marketplace for the services of Tutor Perini Corporation?
Demand for Tutor Perini's expertise continues to grow. Tutor Perini is one of the most versatile and successful contractors in the U.S., with consistently strong earnings and backlog. The company believes that several underlying trends, including the aging of urban infrastructure and continued investment in hospitality, gaming and residential projects at which Tutor Perini excels, will create exciting new opportunities in the future.
What is Tutor Perini's strategy?
On September 8, 2008, Perini Corporation completed a merger with Tutor-Saliba Corporation. The merger capped 11 years of sustained growth with Chairman Ronald N. Tutor as Perini's Chief Executive Officer. The merger provided the two companies with enhanced opportunities for growth through increased size, scale and management capabilities; complementary assets and expertise that supports our vertical integration strategy; immediate access to multiple geographic regions; and increased bonding capacity.
The company's current strategy is to concentrate on the profitable execution of existing backlog as well as to focus resources on the civil construction market with the goal of continuing to improve profit margins.
In building construction, the company plans to continue to seek opportunities in market niches where it has strong expertise, and to expand into new markets that are compatible with its expertise. In addition, Tutor Perini continues to pursue relationships such as design-build and alternative delivery that provide added value to its public and private sector clients. The company believes that the best opportunities for growth for its civil construction business are in complex urban infrastructure projects, particularly in California, metropolitan New York, northern New Jersey, and Baltimore/Washington D.C. where it has a strong regional presence.
