South Shore Hospital (Multiple Projects)Weymouth, Massachusetts
The phased construction program managed by Perini at South Shore Hospital began in 1987 with a four-story addition and renovations to the existing hospital. Interfacing with the existing facility, the 82,000-square-foot addition contains two levels of 30 medical/surgical beds each, and two levels of ancillary services including main lobby, gift shop, admitting, administration, food service, and main dining area. As this phase was completed, ground was broken on a new three-story wing that contains a new emergency care facility and obstetrical services. The final phase included the construction of a new laboratory connected to the hospital via underground tunnel. South Shore Hospital's expanded emergency department, designed by TRO/The Ritchie Organization of Boston, serves 90,0000 patient visits per year, making it one of the largest emergency departments in new England. The department's 76 treatment positions include pods for trauma, acute care, and pediatrics. The new surgical department, also designed by TRO, includes 14 operating rooms, one cystoscopy room, a 30-bed ambulatory surgical unit, and a 30-bed post anesthesia care unit. |

The 3-story, 269,000-square-foot replacement facility was built adjacent to the original 60-year old hospital. Close coordination with the owner, architect and medical staff was an important factor in maintaining uninterrupted hospital services throughout construction. Designed for operational efficiency, the new facility includes a surgical suite, 7 operating rooms, 12 labor and delivery rooms, a 16-bed intensive care nursing unit, a 25-bed progressive care unit and 50 private and semi-private beds. The facility also includes an emergency room and facilities for radiology, pharmacology and medical records. |
